Our Story

What Is Bal Snehalay?

In 2017, we opened our doors to the first 20 children — children of daily-wage labourers, construction workers, and domestic helpers who had nowhere safe to go while their parents worked long, exhausting days.

Today, Bal Snehalay houses over 50 children between the ages of 3 and 16. It is not merely a shelter — it is a complete, warm ecosystem of care. Children wake to a healthy breakfast, attend school with proper uniforms and books fully supported by Rainbow Foundation, return to dedicated tutoring hours, enjoy recreational activities, and sleep in safe, clean environments each night.

Every staff member at Bal Snehalay is trained in child psychology and trauma-sensitive care. We believe that security — emotional and physical — is the prerequisite for every other form of growth. Only when a child feels safe can they truly learn, dream, and flourish.

"Before Bal Snehalay, I used to sit outside a shop all day while Mama worked. Now I go to school, I have friends, and I want to become an engineer. Didi here says I am good at maths."
